An audition monologue is the actor's calling card. It is an opportunity to tell a director, an
agent or casting director how the actor sees him or herself, what personality qualities
the actor wishes to promote, what the actor cares about, what roles the actor is right
for, what playwrights the actor likes. The presentation of the monologue can give the director
information about what the actor will be like if they are to work together. In short, in the
two or four minute duration that it takes to present a couple of monologues a lot of
information can be given and received.
Every actor will have to do an audition monologue at some point in his or her career. It is
unavoidable. Finding good material can take time. It is an ongoing process of choosing pieces,
rehearsing them, and possibly moving on to other pieces as the actor develops.
